Minivans, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and sedans can all be great options for families. The trick is finding a vehicle within your budget that is safe, comfortable and roomy enough for all your needs. Beyond the obvious considerations, like gas mileage and seating, whether the vehicle will fit in your garage, and style–you’re going to drive it for a while, so you might as well like the look of it–consider insurance costs and crash test ratings. The more valuable the vehicle, the more likely you will pay more higher insurance premiums. If you are looking at SUVs, you’ll probably want to check rollover ratings, advises Lauren Fix, a nationally recognized automotive expert and mother of two. SUVs can be sporty and stylish, and can usually accommodate a carpool and all the related gear, while sedans can be great if your kids are older or if you require less room.

First, answer the big questions by deciding how much you can afford to spend, whether to lease or buy, and whether you prefer an SUV, sedan or minivan.

The next step, according to Fix, is to consider four issues. 1: Does the car fit your body structure? Make sure the seating is good for you. It will never get more comfortable as you own it. 2: Can you see? Visibility is critical. Test-drive the car on a route you travel regularly. “If there are large blind spots, find a different vehicle,” advises Fix. 3. Can you comfortably reach all the controls? If you have to stretch, keep looking. 4. Does the car meet your personal needs? Make sure items like cup holders and storage options fit your preferences.
Once you have a short list of vehicles that pass all four tests, check safety ratings and buy the safest car you can…then sit back and enjoy the new ride.
