Hybrids give you better MPG, and they dont give off as much emissions. These cars are perfect for small to mid-sized families. They give you everything a modern luxury car does for right around the same price. They still offer room for people to sit comfortably, and they also offer cargo space.

As America continues its efforts to go green, we as consumers are being bombarded with lots of new products.  Did you know that they even make clothes out of recycled plastic bags?  The auto industry is taking the green challenge seriously and Toyota’s Prius, available at locations from east-coast Boston Toyota across the nation, has long been the main contender.  A few other hybrids have entered the market but none have been original enough or on the market long enough to gain the street credit of the Prius.  Chevrolet is releasing its 2010 Volt, an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle, in limited numbers to begin with and plans to increase production based on success.  It may not be available at every Indiana Chevrolet Dealer nor even in every state, so check with your local dealer first and ask about special ordering.

Chevrolet states the Volt comes with a rechargeable 16 kilowatt lithium-ion battery, and that a three-cylinder gas engine takes over when the battery charge drops below 30%.  The 53 kilowatt generator will recharge the battery pack, and it is estimated that fuel economy will average 50 mpg.  The price is estimated to be in the $40,000 range, and there is a $7,500 federal tax rebate available.  Speeds for the Volt top out at 100 mph, but excessive highway driving at high speeds and using A/C, heater, and audio system would deplete the battery charge in less than 30 miles of travel.  The Volt earns positive marks from U.S. News for low-cost operation, ability to travel 40 miles per day without using any gasoline, and a futuristic sleek exterior and interior design.  U.S. News says the Volt misses the mark with regards to only being able to seat four, a small 10.6 cubic-foot trunk, and the high price for a family sedan.

The Toyota Prius has been on the market for a while now and averages 50 mpg with a bargain price of less than $32,000 for a fully-equipped model and an average sale price of $25,775.  U.S. News praises the vehicle for its great fuel economy, amount of storage space and interior room, and that the driving experience is comparable to a non-hybrid vehicle.  Prius could improve by improving the style, improve the steering, and enlarge the backseat passenger area.
